Broker vs prop firm: what is the difference?

Understand the difference between a broker account and a prop-firm program before comparing fees, rules or account size.

You have 10,000 USD of personal capital and see a prop-firm program advertising a 100,000 USD account. Those figures may look comparable, but they do not represent the same thing.

Broker: you trade through your own account

With a broker, you fund and trade through a personal account. You choose the position size, instruments and trading activity subject to the account’s conditions. Typical checks include account type, platform, spread, commission, swap, instruments and deposit or withdrawal rules.

For example, if you want to begin with a smaller amount of capital that you control and do not want to enter an evaluation, the broker route may be the first one to explore. It does not remove the risk of loss; risk still depends on the instrument, leverage and how you manage the trade.

Prop firm: you trade under a program’s rules

A prop firm commonly asks participants to pass an evaluation or follow the rules of a specific program. Those rules may include a profit target, daily loss limit, overall drawdown, minimum trading days, news rules, overnight or weekend holding, EA restrictions and payout conditions.

The headline “100K” is usually the program’s nominal account size, not 100,000 USD in cash that the participant can freely withdraw. Read the drawdown calculation and the conditions for the exact program before paying a fee.

Decide what to investigate first

If your priority is controlling personal capital and account size, compare broker conditions and account types.
If you are considering a program fee, target and loss limits, read the exact program rules, especially its breach calculation and payout conditions.
If the loss limits are still unclear, start with Daily Loss, Maximum Loss and Trailing Drawdown.

Two traders may choose different routes because their capital, experience and comfort with rules differ. Do not decide from account size, brand name or marketing headlines alone.
